Autumn holidays
on the Norfolk Coast
Enjoy an Autumn break in the UK
at one of our Bed & Breakfast rooms
Round out 2023 this Autumn with a beach getaway!
While the hustle and bustle of the summer is coming to a close and the seasons are shifting, Norfolk is still a wonderful place to visit! As the leaves on the trees turn from green to gold, there's still plenty to do at this stretch of the coast. Whether you're looking for walks through beautiful nature parks, attractions that offer a good day out, or towns that provide unique shopping experiences and cosy cafes to escape the October and November chill.
Norfolk is an ideal out-of-season holiday destination, whether you're looking for a midweek excursion with a close friend, a romantic weekend break, or a half term trip with the family! And just because the weather gets chillier and the warm days are few and far between doesn't mean that your staycations can't be fun or awe-inspiring! Because there's no better remedy for a chilly day than spending it in a cosy cottage with scenic views across a kaleidascope of autumnal colours.

Warm up by the fire, cuddle up in a blanket, and enjoy an Autumn holiday on the Norfolk coast!
Spend an Autumn Holiday walking across Crunchy Leaves and Sandy Beaches
As the leaves turn, change colours, and scatter across the ground, Norfolk's many walking paths transform into sublime trails with an unparalleled natural beauty. Filled with fresh air, beautiful foliage, and diverse wildlife, these routes take on a whole new life in the closing months of the year, and autumn is the perfect time to walk them. Wrap up warm, put on your hiking boots or wellies, and take a stroll through any number of linear and circular routes in the area!
Sandringham is just one of the gorgeous estates in the area that'll give you a serene path to walk. Visitors can enjoy the expansive grounds surrounding the estate that feature both gorgeous woodland and open fields, making it ideal for people and dogs alike! Trails of varying lengths will take you through falling leaves across a diverse landscape of trees, streams, plants, and more!
Alternatively, you can visit one of the many nature reserves in the area. There's the Holme Dunes National Nature Reserve, a sprawling coastal landscape of, as the name suggests, sand dunes, which is home to numerous different species of birds that make their nesting grounds there. As such, if you do visit, be aware of cordoned-off areas, as these may well be bird nesting zones; be sure to give them a wide berth and keep your dog on a lead if you've brought them! Otherwise, enjoy the unique views of undulating beach, made all the more beautiful by the crisp Autumn air.

Sandringham's trees explode in colour in the Autumn months

The view of seeing countless birds take flight is unparalleled
Meanwhile, bird watchers will love the nature reserve at RSPB Snettisham where spectacles featuring tens of thousands of feeding and roosting birds happen regularly in the Autumn. These huge scores of migrating birds take flight across the lagoons and salt marshes of the Wash when the tide naturally pushes them off the mudflats.
And, of course, the change in season means that the restrictions on dogs are lifting, giving even more places for you to take your pooch! Beaches at Heacham, Old Hunstanton, Brancaster, Holkham, and more make for incredible destinations that'll give your dog miles of open beach to run free on, especially in the Autumn when you can avoid the summer crowds.
An Autumn getaway in Norfolk's unique towns
Norfolk is home to a wide variety of quaint towns and expansive cities that provide wonderfully unique shopping experiences. You can visit a smaller town and find some lovely independent shops, or go to one of the bigger cities to shop name brands!
Autumn is a great time to visit these shops since they're unspoilt by the summer crowds. In this season, you'll get to visit these places without having to fight through the denser, busier crowds from April to September, which makes wandering around at your own pace that much more enjoyable. You'll have time to explore shops with their own individual charm and personality in towns like Burnham Market, Holt, and Fakenham. Alternatively, you'll find plenty of shops to cater to your individual taste in large towns and cities like King's Lynn or Norwich.

Burnham Market offers unique shops for a variety of tastes
While you're out and about on your shopping trip, you'll have a wide selection of cosy cafés, restaurants, and pubs to take shelter from the chilly weather in. Duck in from the elements and warm yourself up with a lovely Pumpkin Spice Latte, Maple Mocha, Gingerbread Hot Chocolate, or whatever your personal choice of hot drink is! Maybe you can even try something new at a small, family-run cafe, before continuing on your shopping excursion.
And, of course, the festive period is right around the corner, and there's no better place for thoughtful, one of a kind gifts than the places you can find along the coast at Norfolk. With a fantastic range of shops that sell everything from toys and gadgets to knick-knacks and clothes, you're bound to find unique gifts for your friends and loved ones that'll make this Christmas just that little bit more special.
Norfolk will stay open for your Autumn Break!
Just because the season has wrapped up doesn't mean that Norfolk's come to a standstill! Outside of the walks, towns, and even the main season, you'll find plenty of entertainment and activities for all ages! Attractions like Holkham Hall, Sandringham Estate, Norfolk Lavender, Houghton Hall, and more are open all year round, providing a healthy dose of culture and a calming day out. Meanwhile, coastal resorts like Hunstanton largely stay open accommodate local visitors where you can find arcades, Sea Life centres, and more to keep the kids entertained.
And the season wouldn't be complete without some Halloween fun come October! The spooky season has something for everyone, with Pumpkin picking and carving activities nearby for the kids on their half-term, and creepier options for adults who have an appetite for fear! You can take part in Norwich Ghost Walks for a spine-chilling tour of the city, or visit PrimEvil, a terrifying horror attraction with a variety of "haunts" that will see you getting scared, followed, and even chased through intense haunted houses.
If scares aren't so much your speed, you can visit for the Christmas events that start at the tail-end of the Autumn season. Events like the Thursford Spectacular, Norfolk Lights Express, Luminate Sandringham, and the Norwich Winter Wonderland all start in mid-to-late November. So, if you just can't contain your excitement for the most wonderful time of the year, you can get warmed up to the Christmas spirit at the closing Autumn months in Norfolk!

One of the top things to do in Wells-next-the-Sea
One of the top things to do in Wells-next-the-Sea
A Classic Coastal Adventure for Everyone
Crabbing, affectionately known as "gillying" by the locals, stands out as Wells-next-the-Sea’s ultimate summer ritual. This beloved pastime is accessible to all ages and requires little more than a simple line, a bucket, and a bit of bait—making it both affordable and easy to join in. The process itself is delightfully messy and a little splashy, as participants dangle their lines from the quay, eagerly waiting for a crab to latch on. The excitement builds with every gentle tug, and the thrill of pulling up a wriggling crab never fails to bring smiles and laughter.
Families and friends gather along the harbor, creating a lively, communal atmosphere filled with friendly competition and shared joy. The activity is as much about the experience as it is about the catch, with everyone comparing their hauls and swapping tips on the best bait or technique. Once caught, the crabs are admired for a moment before being gently returned to the water, ensuring the tradition remains sustainable and respectful to local wildlife.
In essence, gillying is more than just a way to pass the time—it’s a cherished Wells tradition that brings people together, celebrates the town’s coastal heritage, and creates lasting summer memories for locals and visitors alike.
Crabbing is a cornerstone of Wells-next-the-Sea
Where does the magic happen?
To take part in the tradition of crabbing at Wells, head to Wells Harbour Quay on the North Norfolk Coast.
What You’ll Need:
- A bucket (to safely hold your crabs before releasing them)
- A baited line (these are often sold at local shops along the quay)
- Some bait (raw bacon is a local favorite, but any smelly meat or fish will do)
- Optional: A net for extra help, and a towel for messy hands
Getting Started:
- Pick Up Supplies: Stop by one of the nearby shops or kiosks along the quay to grab your crabbing essentials. Most sell ready-to-go crabbing kits, and you can usually pick up a slice of bacon if you didn’t bring your own bait.
- Find Your Spot: Stroll along Wells Harbour Quay and choose a spot along the edge. The best spots are often where you see other families and groups gathered—crabs tend to congregate in these areas.
- Prepare Your Line: Attach your bait securely to the end of your line. Lower it gently into the water, letting it rest on the harbour floor.
- Wait and Watch: Be patient! Crabbing is a waiting game. Watch for gentle tugs on your line, which signal a crab is nibbling at your bait.
- Haul Up Your Catch: Slowly and steadily pull up your line. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a crab clinging to the bait. Use your net if needed to help lift the crab into your bucket.
- Observe and Release: Take a moment to admire your catch, but remember to handle the crabs gently. Once you’ve had your fun, return them carefully to the water so others can enjoy the tradition too.
Tips for a Great Crabbing Experience:
- Crabs prefer shade and cooler water, so try different spots if you’re not having luck.
- Keep your bucket in the shade and add some seawater to keep the crabs comfortable.
- Never overcrowd your bucket—release crabs regularly to avoid stressing them.
- Always return the crabs to the water at the end of your session.
Why It’s Special:
Crabbing at Wells Harbour Quay isn’t just about the catch—it’s about the laughter, the friendly competition, and the memories made with friends and family. The quay comes alive with excitement as people compare their hauls and swap tips, all while enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery.
So, grab your bucket and line, pick your perfect spot, and join in this timeless Wells tradition. Happy gillying!
Coastal Fun that Sticks with You!
This isn’t just an activity — it’s a memory in the making.
Crabbing at Wells is about more than just the catch. It’s about the friendly competition, the shared joy, and the memories created with loved ones against the backdrop of the picturesque Norfolk coast. The tradition is as much about the experience as it is about the crabs themselves. After admiring your catch, remember to gently return the crabs to the water, ensuring this beloved pastime remains sustainable and respectful to local wildlife.
After a day spent enjoying the simple pleasures of the coast, there’s no better way to unwind than at one of our cosy cottages—just a few miles from the Quay. Here, you can relax and relive the day’s adventures, surrounded by comfort and the soothing sounds of the sea.
So grab your bucket and line, pick your perfect spot along the quay, and join in this timeless Wells tradition. Whether you catch one crab or twenty, you’ll leave with a smile—and a memory that will last long after the tide has gone out.

Our dog friendly accommodation makes things that little bit easier for guests. We understand that while a lot of the Norfolk Coast caters for dogs, not so many accommodations allow them, which is why we strive to offer the best dog friendly experience for all our guests. We offer a variety of facilities for pets on-site, including a dog shower and dog towels for you to clean your pooch off after a walk on the Norfolk coast. We also offer a nice, comfy bed for them, as well as bowls for their food and water, and treats on arrival, so they feel thoroughly pampered on their holiday!
On top of all that, we're also in a prime spot as we're only a few minutes walk (or walkies!) away from the dog friendly Heacham South Beach! This beach welcomes dogs all year-round - unlike a few other beaches in the area which are restricted for the summer - and provides a convenient and expansive area for your pup to run miles!
The beach is an ideal location for dogs to run on, as the soft sand is easier on their paws. Not only that, but the beach will transform for them depending on where the tide is. When it's out, your furry friend will have miles of flat, open sand to sprint across. When it's in, your dog can do a lovely bit of swimming, which is an excellent way to cool them off on a hot day... just don't forget to towel them off before they come back in!
So, if you and your pup have come along for this wonderful adventure on the Norfolk Coast and loved every minute of it as much as we loved having you, we would really appreciate if you could take a moment of your time to vote for us at the DogFriendly awards!
And whether you vote or not, we look forward to seeing you and your dog again soon!
A fun day at the beach for you and your pup are only a stone's throw away from us!
