The North Norfolk Coast has been a popular vacation destination for centuries, with our location being a part of that history. But with so many great places to visit, choosing just one can be a challenge. We’ve put together our top five North Norfolk Coast tucked-away treasures that you don’t want to miss when planning your trip to this lovely part of the world.
The coastline, which stretches for over 100 miles, is home to quaint villages, picturesque beaches, and historic landmarks. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, and bird watching. The Norfolk Coast is also known for its delicious seafood restaurants like The White Horse located in Brancaster Staithe, and The Kings Head at Blakeney.
In 2019, the Norfolk Coast was voted one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times. The paper's annual Best Places to Live guide helps people identify the best locations to buy a home and enjoy life in Britain. It takes into account factors including quality of life, jobs, schools, community spirit, and local amenities. The Norfolk Coast was praised for its "unspoiled coastline", "quaint villages" and "truly idyllic setting".
Winterton is known for being the only sea resort on Norfolk that faces directly onto the North Sea and has its own beach. This county town has been a favourite holiday destination since Victorian times, and it offers ample opportunities for walking along picturesque sand dunes, exploring quaint shops and simply relaxing by the seaside with a good book or coffee and friends.
During the winter months, you may be able to catch sight of the grey and harbour seals that come to visit us here on the Norfolk Coast, they like to relax in the sand dunes, feeling safe they raise their young cubs here before heading off for the summer months, leave the sand dunes for us to explore. Be sure to keep a safe distance and keep your dogs in a lead when visiting the seals.
Like Winterton, Hunstanton has long served as a gathering place over the centuries nearly 700 years ago famous poet Geoffrey Chaucer made mention of Hunstanton in his epic poem “The Canterbury Tales”! Today visitors come for its endless beaches flanked by rock cliffs or for its rich history at such landmarks as Old Hunstanton Chapel and The Red Mount Chapel built in 1585 from flintstone unearthed during construction at nearby Holme-next-the-Sea.
Along the beach, in the summer you will find traditional confectionary traders, Ice Cream vans, Fish & Chips, and more. Children will be thrilled by Pony Rides along the sand and a trip out on The Wash Monster to see the seals out in the North Sea, along with a variety of other fun activities.
A mere 10 miles north of Cromer lies Sheringham, another lovely little town renowned for its fishing heritage, sandy beaches edged by the rocky coastline and quaint stone architecture like All Saints Church built in 1421 on Beeston Bump hilltop offering stunning views of both land and sea vistas below!
Of all the seaside on Norfolk Coast, none quite compares to picturesque, unhurried Wells-next-the-Sea whose colourful beach houses line an expansive golden sands beach starting from the iconic striped red and white Holkham Hall inlets reaching as far as Stiffkey salt marshes. As an added bonus, take a leisurely boat ride through The Nature Reserve for a closer look at native seal colonies or join in on the mussel-picking tradition!
Finally, we come to one of Norfolk’s best-kept secrets: majestic Holkham Hall. Set upon 25,000 acres of pristine parkland and deer herds, this stunning Palladian mansion was built between 1734-1764 and is still home to the Earl of Leicester’s family today who welcome visitors from near and far year-round to share in its beauty whether it be exploring the house itself or enjoying outdoor activities like horse riding, cycling or simply taking a peaceful stroll around Holkham Estate’s lake villages dotted with thatched cottages!

Show Respect For Seashore Creatures
Seashore creatures are fascinating and have found special ways of living in their environment. They have to adapt to survive the rigours of wave-action, exposure and predation. Some have shells for protection, but many need to hide under rocks, seaweed or in the sand.
Exploring The Seashore Is Fun, But Please Remember:
Take Photos, Not Living Animals
If you want to buy a souvenir:
Avoid Disturbing Wildlife
You can see many animals at their best when they are behaving naturally. This is true for animals such as seals, otters and seabirds, as well as rock pool animals. To avoid disturbing wildlife:
Take Your Rubbish Home With You
Beach rubbish is unsightly and can be dangerous to sea creatures. Much of the litter on our shores comes from tourists, shipping, fishing vessels and sewage outfalls. You can help to reduce this problem when visiting the coast:
Watch Where You Go
Beaches and sand dunes are prone to erosion and easily damaged by people and vehicles. To help protect the coast:
Be Careful!
All cliffs are unstable and potentially dangerous, yet they are an impressive sight and from the cliff top it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline. Cliffs also provide a very specialised habitat for the plants and animals that live on them.
Take Care Near Cliffs:
Norfolk is a beautiful place to visit, but you should be aware of the weather conditions if you're planning on booking your trip during certain months of the year. May and February are typically the driest months, so if you're hoping to avoid rain, those might be better times to visit. However, keep in mind that Norfolk can be quite chilly during those months, so pack accordingly!
