The Different Types Of Cottages Found On The North Norfolk Coast

There are a variety of cottages found on the North Norfolk Coast, from traditional thatched roof cottages to more modern styles. Many of the cottages are located in picturesque villages and offer stunning views of the coastline. At Norfolk Coastal Cottages we offer a variety of accommodation options, from Chalet and Dog Friendly self-catering Cottages to bed and breakfast accommodation.

Some common cottage types include:

Thatched cottages: These cottages often have traditional features such as exposed beams, low ceilings, and small windows. They are typically found in rural areas.

Chalet cottages: A type of cottage which is typically built from wood, with a sloping roofline and large windows. Chalet cottages are often found in mountainous regions or near ski resorts.

Coastal cottages: As the name suggests, these types of cottages are usually located on or near the coast. They tend to be small and compact, making them ideal for holidays by the sea.

Seaside self-catering cottages: These cottages are often located near the beach and have features such as large windows to enjoy the view, a porch or deck for relaxing, and easy access to the beach.

Holiday cottages: These cottages are usually rented out by the week or month and are furnished with everything you need for a comfortable stay. They can be found in both rural and seaside locations.

What are the pros and cons of self-catering accommodation?

At mYminiBreak, we understand the importance of weighing the pros and cons before deciding on a self-catering holiday. Here's a breakdown of key factors to consider:

Self-catering can be pricey, particularly for larger groups, factoring in accommodation costs, meals, and household expenses like laundry. However, over longer stays, the flexibility and potential for bulk purchases often make it more economical compared to hotel stays, which can rack up expenses with additional activities and dining options.

Opting for self-catering provides unparalleled independence and privacy, ideal for those craving personal space or seeking a peaceful retreat. Families, especially with young children, appreciate the freedom to unwind at their own pace. Yet, hotels offer abundant social and recreational opportunities, such as kids' clubs, catering to those eager to explore and mingle.

When it comes to dining, self-catering usually offers better value, with fully equipped kitchens enabling guests to prepare meals at their convenience. Conversely, hotels typically provide limited dining options, often restricted to breakfast or half-board packages. While self-catering demands effort, it affords the flexibility to dine in or out, catering to varied preferences.

Addressing concerns, self-catering properties may encounter delays in resolving issues like appliance malfunctions, particularly if owners are distant. Hotels, on the other hand, offer immediate assistance, providing peace of mind to guests.

Self-catering excels for families and larger groups, offering ample space, although exceptions exist, notably in city center apartments. For solo travelers or couples, hotel holidays may present better overall value.

What type of self-catering accommodation would suit your needs?

Types of Holiday Lets

There are many different types of self-catering accommodation available these days, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find something that suits your needs. The main options include:

Private villas – usually located in sunny destinations like Spain and Portugal; tend to be large properties with plenty of space inside and out (usually including at least one pool!). Can cost anything from £300 per night upwards depending on location/size etc., although it’s worth shopping around online before booking anything. Remember that some villas charge extra per person above a certain number (e.g. 2 adults + 4 children) while others may offer discounts for longer stays (e.g. a month or more).

Hot tub holidays – these can be quite popular in winter (especially around Christmas and New Year) as they offer a unique way to relax after a long day of exploring the local area! Some properties come with an outdoor hot tub that guests can use for free, while others charge an extra fee for this facility (usually £20-£40 per night). You should check if there are any age restrictions before booking though as some places only allow adults over the age of 21 to use them.

Holiday cottages – usually located in rural areas like the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales; tend to be small properties with one or two bedrooms but sometimes have larger family-sized options too. Can cost anything from £200 per night upwards depending on location/size etc., although it’s worth shopping around online before booking anything. Remember that some cottages charge extra per person above a certain number (e.g. 2 adults + 4 children) while others may offer discounts for longer stays (e.g. a month or more).

Ski chalets – often located in mountain resorts like France, Switzerland and Austria; tend to be large properties with plenty of space inside and out (usually including at least one pool!). Can cost anything from £600 per night upwards depending on location/size etc., although it’s worth shopping around online before booking anything. Remember that some chalets charge extra per person above a certain number (e.g. 2 adults + 4 children) while others may offer discounts for longer stays (e.g. a month or more).

City apartments – these can be quite popular in places like London, Paris and New York; tend to be small properties with one or two bedrooms but sometimes have larger family-sized options too. Can cost anything from £300 per night upwards depending on location/size etc., although it’s worth shopping around online before booking anything. Remember that some apartments charge extra per person above a certain number (e.g. 2 adults + 4 children) while others may offer discounts for longer stays (e.g. a month or more).

How easy is it to find a holiday let that meets all your requirements?

Finding the Right Holiday Let

There are many different websites where you can find self-catering accommodation, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find something that meets all your requirements:

Airbnb – this website has become quite popular in recent years as it offers an easy way to find and book private accommodation all over the world. You can search for properties in your chosen destination using various criteria (e.g. price, number of bedrooms etc.), which makes it very easy to find something that suits your needs. Once you’ve found a place you like, you can contact the owner directly to arrange a booking – although it’s worth reading the reviews first to make sure that other guests have had a good experience there too!

HomeAway – this website is quite similar to Airbnb but offers a slightly different selection of properties, so it’s definitely worth checking both before making any decisions. One key difference is that HomeAway allows you to search for specific types of self-catering accommodation (e.g. apartments, chalets etc.), which can be very useful if you know exactly what kind of place you want to stay in!

Owners Direct – this website specialises in private holiday rentals and has an extensive selection of properties all over the world, so it should be fairly easy to find something that meets your needs regardless of where you’re going! As with the other websites mentioned above, it’s always worth reading the reviews before making any decisions as they can give you a good idea of what to expect from each place.

TripAdvisor – this website is probably best known for its hotel reviews but it also has a section dedicated to self-catering accommodation, which can be very useful if you’re struggling to make a decision! You can use the ‘Price’ and ‘Property Type’ filters to narrow down your search and there are also plenty of user-generated reviews for each place, which can be very helpful when trying to choose between different options.

Our Nature Saving Pledge

Keep the Norfolk Coast clean

A self-catering holiday is all about spending time with your loved ones and reconnecting with nature. And we want nothing more than to share this wonderful part of Norfolk with you and all that nature has to enjoy.

Here at Norfolk Coastal Cottages, we are committed to respecting the countryside and keeping it clean. We operate under and encourage a leave-no-trace ethos to all our guests, which means that when visiting the countryside you leave no trace of your visit to our Norfolk Coast and leave it exactly in the state it was when you arrived. It's this way of thinking that we hope to imprint on all who pass through our corner of the world which will help to ensure the protection of our precious countryside and the wildlife that live here.

The Countryside Code

The Countryside Code is supported by Natural England.

Protect The Environment

  • Take your litter home – leave no trace of your visit
  • Do not light fires and only have BBQs where signs say you can
  • Always keep dogs under control and insight
  • Dog poo – bag it and bin it – any public waste bin will do
  • Care for nature – do not cause damage or disturbance
  • Enjoy The Outdoors
  • Check your route and local conditions
  • Plan your adventure – know what to expect and what you can do
  • Enjoy your visit, have fun, make a memory

Leave No Trace

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Be Considerate of others
  • Respect Farm animals and wildlife
  • Travel and camp on durable ground
  • Leave what you find
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Minimise the effects of fire
The Seashore Code

Show Respect For Seashore Creatures

Seashore creatures are fascinating and have found special ways of living in their environment. They have to adapt to survive the rigours of wave-action, exposure and predation. Some have shells for protection, but many need to hide under rocks, seaweed or in the sand.

Exploring The Seashore Is Fun, But Please Remember:

  • Leave animals where you find them.
  • Take care when touching soft-bodied animals - they are very delicate.
  • Carefully lift and replace any rocks you may have moved - there are animals underneath which need them for shelter.
  • Leave attached seaweed in place - there is plenty lying loose on the strand line.
  • Do not trample through rock pools.

Take Photos, Not Living Animals

  • Shells come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Many still contain living animals, even if they do look 'dead'. If you want to collect shells, please make sure they are empty before taking them home.

If you want to buy a souvenir:

  • Buy a photograph, book or poster of colourful marine creatures rather than shells, coral, starfish and urchins or other 'marine curios'. Remember 'curios' would almost certainly have been alive, when collected. If we don't buy them, the shops won't sell them.

Avoid Disturbing Wildlife

You can see many animals at their best when they are behaving naturally. This is true for animals such as seals, otters and seabirds, as well as rock pool animals. To avoid disturbing wildlife:

  • It is best to watch from a distance, through binoculars if possible, especially if the animals are nesting, or pupping in the case of seals.
  • Keep your dog clear of birds and other animals.
  • Remember, it is now illegal to disturb or harass many species of birds and animals.

Take Your Rubbish Home With You

Beach rubbish is unsightly and can be dangerous to sea creatures. Much of the litter on our shores comes from tourists, shipping, fishing vessels and sewage outfalls. You can help to reduce this problem when visiting the coast:

  • Take your rubbish home - burying it is no solution.
  • Keep your dog from fouling the beach.
  • Report canisters or drums that may be washed up on the beach, but do not touch them.
  • Take part in BeachWatch - the annual beach clean and survey organised by the Marine Conservation Society, or Adopt-a-Beach - a regular survey of beach litter.
  • Bag It and Bin It, Please Don't Flush It - bag and bin all plastic bathroom waste such as cotton bud sticks.

Watch Where You Go

Beaches and sand dunes are prone to erosion and easily damaged by people and vehicles. To help protect the coast:

  • Keep to established paths and dune boardwalks.
  • Park in designated car parks and keep access to footpaths clear.
  • Do not use beaches or dunes for scrambling motorcycles or other 'off-road' vehicles.
  • If you dig holes in the beach, please fill them up again.
  • Leave pebbles and rocks on the beach rather than collect them for your garden.

Be Careful!

All cliffs are unstable and potentially dangerous, yet they are an impressive sight and from the cliff top it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline. Cliffs also provide a very specialised habitat for the plants and animals that live on them.

Take Care Near Cliffs:

  • Remember that it is dangerous to climb up or go near the top or bottom of a cliff.
  • Please don't throw or push anything over the edge of cliffs. As well as being dangerous, it can increase the rate of cliff erosion and kill or disturb wildlife.
  • Play safe on the beach too: Check tide times to avoid being cut off. Keep away from soft sand and mud - it is easy to get stuck!
