Shepherds Hut Holidays - A romantic outdoor retreat

Shepherds Huts offer a bespoke and luxury glamping holiday

As glamping has risen in popularity, new ways to experience the outdoors have cropped up across the UK. From simple affairs like bell tents and yurts, to more elaborate structures such as the safari tent, to unique ways of camping like tree tents. Among these, Shepherds Huts stand out as a more cosy and private glamping option; one that combines the bounty and beauty of the great outdoors with high quality craftsmanship to provide a memorable getaway.

Once a place for shepherds to rest, now a space for glamping guests

As the name suggests, Shepherds Huts have historically hosted shepherds. Their simplistic design and mobility made them ideal for farmers of the nineteenth century to take shelter in while raising and lambing sheep since this process required the shepherds to be able to see and hear their flock, and often coincided with the colder months of the year. These huts typically used cast iron wheels and corrugated iron tops, with the chassis interchangeably being built of wood or corrugated iron as well.

Shepherd's Huts have had many uses over the years

For their purposes of being a place to rest away from the main farm, the Shepherds Huts needed to be a place to sleep, cook, eat, and relax all in one. Thus, their interior included a stove for cooking and warmth, a table for dining, and a bed for sleeping. Their design also included windows on either side to see the flock, and a stable door facing away from the wind to keep the hut warm but allow the shepherd to hear the flock. These huts were built to last and keep shepherds within walking distance of the sheep.

As generations passed and farming methods changed and improved, the need for the Shepherds Hut as practical accommodation dwindled. Larger buildings allowed farmers to keep their flock close enough to the farm, and while there are some claims of the huts continuing to be used in the more northern parts of the UK, their practical use in farming was relegated to storerooms as the 20th century went on.

But, just as farming methods progressed so, too, did advancements in building, cooking, bedding and, of course, camping and holidays! Through all this, Shepherds Huts have found a new purpose, combining their historically practical use with modern conveniences for a quirky yet comfortable place to stay.

Simple exterior, cosy and private interior

Now with modern insulation materials, a more complete kitchen, comfortable seating and better heating, Shepherds Huts have transformed from a practical solution for a lambing problem to a peaceful escape in the countryside. The contemporary huts generally retain the rustic exterior with wooden siding and a corrugated roof to give that lovely and unique farm feel, but with thicker, insulated walls to trap heat and keep the cabin cosy in those colder climates. They also sometimes have additions to the outside, with some having outdoor seating areas and decking so you can enjoy the warmer weather, too.
