Houghton Hall, Gardens and Sculpture Park

Houghton Hall in Norfolk was built in the 1720s for Britain's First Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and is now home to the Marquess of Cholmondeley. It has been described by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as "the most important house in England built between Wren and Adam". The estate was sold off during World War Two, but Lord Cholmondeley's father bought it back after becoming wealthy from his time in Africa. In 2007, the current lord opened up the State Rooms at Houghton Hall to the public for tours.

Houghton Hall is home to some of the finest gardens in England. The house was built with an eye on the picturesque, so it comes as no surprise that there are beautiful views from every window. The south side looks out onto a series of terraces, lawns and ponds, while the north side has sweeping views over parkland and woodland.

The gardens were designed by William Kent in the early 18th century and include a number of follies, such as a mock-Gothic ruin and an Egyptian obelisk.

The estate is also home to the Cholmondeley Arms, a pub which dates back to the 15th century. The pub was closed for several years in the early 2000s but has since been reopened and is now a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
