Family-Friendly Activities in Norfolk

There is a wide variety of activities available in West and North Norfolk, and our chalets are located just a short distance away from the beach resort of Hunstanton. Golden sand beaches are a hallmark of the seaside resort town of Hunstanton, which is popular for its proximity to the shore and the abundance of water sports that can be enjoyed there, such as windsurfing and sailing.

The Norfolk Coast Path

The Norfolk Coast Path traverses the heritage coast of Norfolk as it makes its way from Hunstanton in the west to Cromer in the east. This path is located entirely inside the Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In addition to being a beach resort town, Hunstanton is also the location of the Sea Life Sanctuary and the Hunstanton Lighthouse.

A number of stores and cafes can be found along the promenade in the seaside town of Hunstanton, making it an ideal destination to go for a vacation that is more typical of those spent at seaside resorts. The town also provides a wide range of activities for children, such as a funfair, an arcade, and a number of play parks, all of which are located throughout the town. In addition, there are a number of golf clubs in the surrounding area, including the Hunstanton Golf Club and the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, both of which include a selection of different courses for players to pick from.

For those who enjoy being outdoors, North Norfolk offers a wide variety of activities to choose from. In the course of the summer, the Holme Bird Observatory in Norfolk hosts guided bird walks, and in the course of the winter, it hosts bird-watching classes.

Our dog-friendly vacation cottages on the coast of Norfolk are located just a short drive away from the observatory.

Norfolk Beaches

Don't worry if you're someone who enjoys going to the beach. Along the coast of Norfolk, there are a great number of breathtaking beaches. Heacham Beach, Snettisham Beach, and Old Hunstanton Beach are three of our very favourites in the area. Heacham Beach is conveniently located just a few steps from our front door. The second beach is particularly well-liked by dog walkers because it is one of the few beaches in Norfolk that welcomes canine visitors throughout the year.

You can also enjoy some excellent views over The Wash at the nearby RSPB Snettisham Nature Reserve, or you can visit one of our country parks, such as Sheringham Park or Holt Country Park, both of which provide magnificent landscapes that are perfect for a stroll in the afternoon.

Wild Ken Hill

The goal of the Wild Ken Hill rewilding project is to move away from traditional methods of agriculture and forestry in order to provide room for the flourishing of wild nature. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate that land may be managed to mitigate the effects of climate change, enhance air and water quality, and create habitats for important species of flora and fauna.

The team working on Wild Ken Hill is dedicated to utilising the location as a living laboratory in anticipation that it may one day serve as a model for other initiatives located all throughout Europe. The property has been redesigned to include wildflower meadows and mixed forests. Additionally, ponds have been dug out in portions of the land that are prone to natural floods and will therefore be well maintained. The location encompasses more than 500 acres and is home to a wide variety of animal life, such as goshawks and red kites. In addition, the region has seen the return of rare wildflowers, such as purple orchids, as a result of the restoration initiative.

Bird Watching Holidays at Norfolk Self Catering Accommodation

Bird Watching Holidays

Birdwatchers will enjoy their time at Wild Ken Hill very much. It is situated in the West Norfolk, a region that is home to a number of the most endangered bird species in Britain. Because of the area's distinct ecosystems and animals, it has been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Throughout the winter months, the staff at Wild Ken Hill hosts birdwatching classes in addition to offering guided walks and talks at the location.

Shepherd's huts and glamping bell tents are available for guests to stay in when visiting Norfolk self catering accommodation at Norfolk Coast B&B Cottages and Camping. These accommodations may be found in the vicinity of the campsite. These provide guests with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to stay in the middle of nature and experience everything that Wild Ken Hill has to offer during their time there.

Because our farm was a part of the Wild Ken Hill estate up until it was divided up in 1935, we feel a strong connection to the area as well as its long and illustrious past. We have a deep-seated interest in rewilding and are dedicated to collaborating with the Wild Ken Hill team to assist in the revitalization of this unique area.

The Seashore Code

Show Respect For Seashore Creatures

Seashore creatures are fascinating and have found special ways of living in their environment. They have to adapt to survive the rigours of wave-action, exposure and predation. Some have shells for protection, but many need to hide under rocks, seaweed or in the sand.

Exploring The Seashore Is Fun, But Please Remember:

  • Leave animals where you find them.
  • Take care when touching soft-bodied animals - they are very delicate.
  • Carefully lift and replace any rocks you may have moved - there are animals underneath which need them for shelter.
  • Leave attached seaweed in place - there is plenty lying loose on the strand line.
  • Do not trample through rock pools.

Take Photos, Not Living Animals

  • Shells come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Many still contain living animals, even if they do look 'dead'. If you want to collect shells, please make sure they are empty before taking them home.

If you want to buy a souvenir:

  • Buy a photograph, book or poster of colourful marine creatures rather than shells, coral, starfish and urchins or other 'marine curios'. Remember 'curios' would almost certainly have been alive, when collected. If we don't buy them, the shops won't sell them.

Avoid Disturbing Wildlife

You can see many animals at their best when they are behaving naturally. This is true for animals such as seals, otters and seabirds, as well as rock pool animals. To avoid disturbing wildlife:

  • It is best to watch from a distance, through binoculars if possible, especially if the animals are nesting, or pupping in the case of seals.
  • Keep your dog clear of birds and other animals.
  • Remember, it is now illegal to disturb or harass many species of birds and animals.

Take Your Rubbish Home With You

Beach rubbish is unsightly and can be dangerous to sea creatures. Much of the litter on our shores comes from tourists, shipping, fishing vessels and sewage outfalls. You can help to reduce this problem when visiting the coast:

  • Take your rubbish home - burying it is no solution.
  • Keep your dog from fouling the beach.
  • Report canisters or drums that may be washed up on the beach, but do not touch them.
  • Take part in BeachWatch - the annual beach clean and survey organised by the Marine Conservation Society, or Adopt-a-Beach - a regular survey of beach litter.
  • Bag It and Bin It, Please Don't Flush It - bag and bin all plastic bathroom waste such as cotton bud sticks.

Watch Where You Go

Beaches and sand dunes are prone to erosion and easily damaged by people and vehicles. To help protect the coast:

  • Keep to established paths and dune boardwalks.
  • Park in designated car parks and keep access to footpaths clear.
  • Do not use beaches or dunes for scrambling motorcycles or other 'off-road' vehicles.
  • If you dig holes in the beach, please fill them up again.
  • Leave pebbles and rocks on the beach rather than collect them for your garden.

Be Careful!

All cliffs are unstable and potentially dangerous, yet they are an impressive sight and from the cliff top it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline. Cliffs also provide a very specialised habitat for the plants and animals that live on them.

Take Care Near Cliffs:

  • Remember that it is dangerous to climb up or go near the top or bottom of a cliff.
  • Please don't throw or push anything over the edge of cliffs. As well as being dangerous, it can increase the rate of cliff erosion and kill or disturb wildlife.
  • Play safe on the beach too: Check tide times to avoid being cut off. Keep away from soft sand and mud - it is easy to get stuck!
